The 2026 Google Business Profile Checklist for Home Service Businesses

When a homeowner needs a plumber, a roofer, or a land clearing crew, they don’t browse websites first. They search, glance at the map results, and call one of the top three businesses they see. That map pack is powered by your Google Business Profile, and for most home service businesses it generates more calls than the website itself.

Yet most contractors set up their profile once, claim it, and never touch it again. Here’s the checklist we run for our own clients, in order of impact.

1. Get Your GBP Categories Right

Your primary category is the single strongest ranking signal in your profile. “Excavating contractor” and “Land clearing service” are different categories with different search volume. Pick the one that matches the jobs you actually want, then add every legitimate secondary category. Don’t guess; search your top competitors and see what they use.

2. Google Reviews: Volume, Recency, and Responses

Reviews are the #1 trust signal homeowners look at and a top-3 local ranking factor. Three things matter: how many you have, how recently you got them, and whether you respond. A steady drip of two to four new reviews a month beats a one-time burst of twenty. Reply to every single one, including the bad ones. A calm, professional response to a 1-star review wins you more jobs than five 5-star reviews nobody replied to.

3. Publish a GBP Post Every Week

GBP posts are free advertising space directly on your profile. Businesses that post weekly signal to Google, and to customers, that they’re active and open. Share completed jobs, seasonal offers, and helpful tips. A post takes ten minutes and stays visible right where buying decisions happen.

4. Add Real Job Site Photos to Your Profile Constantly

Stock photos kill trust. Upload real job site photos, your trucks, your crew. Profiles with regularly added photos get significantly more direction requests and calls. Before-and-after shots are the highest performers for home services; homeowners want to see the result they’re buying.

5. Complete Every GBP Field, Especially Services and Service Areas

Services, service areas, hours, attributes, the business description: every empty field is a missed ranking opportunity. Be specific in your services list. “French drain installation” will match searches that a generic “drainage” entry never will.

6. Seed Your GBP Q&A Section Before Someone Else Does

Anyone can ask and answer questions on your profile. Seed it yourself with the questions you hear on every estimate call: Do you offer free quotes? Are you licensed and insured? How far out are you booked? You control the narrative, and you save yourself the phone call.

7. Track the Calls and Leads Your GBP Actually Produces

If you can’t see how many calls, direction requests, and website clicks your profile drives each month, you’re flying blind. GBP’s built-in insights are a start; pairing them with call tracking shows you which leads actually became jobs.

Your GBP Is a Weekly Habit, Not a One-Time Setup

Your Google Business Profile is the highest-ROI marketing asset you own, and maintaining it is a discipline. If you’d rather spend that time running jobs, that’s exactly what we do for our clients every week.
